Introduction

We present photographic b26·75 magnitudes, radii and ellipticities, together with (u - b) and (b - r) colours for 4903 galaxies within a 4·69 square degree field around the Shapley 8 cluster (Abell 3558).

Data Format

  1. internal identification number
  2. Right Ascension (1950·0)
  3. Declination (1950·0)
  4. b26·75, integrated blue (b-band) magnitude within the 26·75 mag.arcsec-2 isophote
  5. r*(26·75) arcsec = (A/pi)0·5 where A is the area enclosed by the 26·75 b mag.arcsec-2 isophote; an asterisk denotes an image corrected for overlap
  6. epsilon = (1 - b/a), the ellipticity of the image (usually b-band) at the outermost uncontaminated isophote (a and b denote the major and minor semi-axes respectively)
  7. theta deg, the position angle of the major axis of the image
  8. (u - b) colour of the image bounded by an isophote of area A where
  9. r*(u - b) arcsec = (A/pi)0·5; 'c' denotes colour with image core excluded
  10. (b - r) colour of the image bounded by an isophote of area A where
  11. r*(b - r) arcsec = (A/pi)0·5; 'c' denotes colour with image core excluded
  12. (r - i) colour of the image bounded by an isophote of area A where
  13. r*(r - i) arcsec = (A/pi)0·5; 'c' denotes colour with image core excluded
  14. comments
  15. radial velocity (km.s-1); '1' denotes (Metcalfe, Godwin and Spenser 1987); '2' denotes (Teague and Carter 1990)
The sample is essentially complete to b26·75 = 20·85, with rms deviations in b26·75, (u - b) and (b - r) of about 0·07, 0·06 and 0·05 mag respectively brightward of b26·75 = 18·9 and 0·15, 0·10 and 0·10 mag respectively faintward. Where the r* associated with colours are given as zero, colours were formed by matching radial logarithmic surface brightness profiles in the respective bands. Full details of the catalogue are given in Metcalfe, Godwin and Peach 1994.
